Single father of three teenage boys since the death of their mother in 2018 from cancer. Born and raised in Perth, Russell is a Qualified Tradesperson for the Automotive Industry.

His past includes TAFE lecturer from 1987 to 1995. Indigenous Training and Employment coordinator 1995 to 2001 in the Goldfields, Kimberly and Pilbara regions for private and public sectors with strong involvement in the development and delivering of Structured Workplace Training in the mining industry. From 2003 to 2013, Russell was involved in Information Technology targeting local indigenous people in the Kimberly region.

Lived experiences include; interaction with people experiencing homelessness, high rates of suicide, lack of job opportunities, high incarceration rates in towns that have the most condensed groups of disadvantaged people in society, compounded by the lack of access to real support and assistance.
